Grading

HACO uses a national standard known as the Australian Walking Track Grading System to help people choose walking trails that match their fitness level, experience, and comfort with outdoor terrain. This system categorises walking tracks into five grades, ranging from very easy to highly challenging, based on factors like surface condition, steepness, signage, and required navigation skills.

The grading system is designed to provide clear expectations about what a walker might encounter on a trail. Easier walks are typically flat, well-maintained, and suitable for families or those with limited mobility. More difficult hikes may involve steep climbs, rough or uneven terrain, limited signage, and remote locations that require strong fitness, navigation experience, and proper preparation.

By using these standardised grades, walkers can confidently select trails that suit their abilities and comfort levels, helping to ensure both an enjoyable and safe outdoor experience. It's also a helpful tool for planning hikes, especially in unfamiliar areas, and encourages responsible use of Australia’s diverse and beautiful natural environments.
