Backpack
Carrying the right pack for the right hike is essential. In general, an adjustable pack that fits closely to your body offers the best comfort and helps reduce strain on your back and shoulders. A properly fitted pack should rest above your hip bones, allowing your hips to bear most of the weight rather than your shoulders.
For day hikes, choose a lightweight, adjustable pack with enough room for water, snacks, and extra clothing. Avoid string bags or loose-fitting packs that don’t support your back properly. The HACO team will inspect all packs before the hike begins and may prohibit participation if a pack is deemed unsafe or likely to cause injury. If you’re unsure, please reach out to a HACO team member before your hike for guidance.
For overnight hikes, HACO provides a lightweight multi-day backpack along with the required overnight gear.
Before every hike, HACO staff will check that each participant is wearing their backpack correctly to ensure proper fit and safety.
